In june 2010 I began a collaboration with Preface, part of Leo Lagrange Foundation, which mission is to provide professional education and training in several fields. I was hired to give workshops to groups of inmates of Arles prison participating in a long term formation program about digital images production and management.

Since then I have been several times to prison for other projects; the experience is certainly interesting and obtained  interest from public and professionals.

The ten images produced during the first workshop, entitled  ”Une vie en noir et blanc”, were also appreciated by Francois Hebel, Director of Les Rencontres d’Arles, who wanted to expose them along with those taken by my colleague Michel Gasarian.

Both works will then be on display from 2011 July 4 until 2011 september 28 at Saint-Cesaire Convent under the title “Imprisonment seen from the inside – Workshops in the penitential of Arles.”

I was a kid when Renzo Zorzi, at that time manager of Olivetti image, design and cultural activities, knew my work on the restoration of Castelvecchio Museum in Verona, and charged me to explore with my camera (at that time it was a marvellous heavy and slow Sinar 5×8) also the store that Carlo Scarpa had designed and opened in 1958 in Venice in Piazza San Marco for Adriano Olivetti.

In the words of Fulvio Irace, “it is a work quite unusual for the attention to materials, and the quality of space and the manner in which this space is “theatralized”. This is a shop a few square meters wide, which is masterfully organized, with the ground floor and mezzanine, in a way that can be defined in a positive way “theatrical” in the sense that it is as a staging of a long space story , where even the topic “water” is introduced  – water is one of the classic themes of Scarpa – through the shape of the fountain and the pool on which the Viani sculpture lies”.

This jewel is now owned by Assicurazioni Generali Company, which after a careful restoration has entrusted to the care FAI :: Italian Environmental Fund, which since April 20, 2011  will make of it its headquarters in Venice.

Thirty of my photographs, taken around 1984, emerged from the archives of Olivetti thanks to Architect Paul Navone, and will be on show until ‘May 8, 2011 in another masterpiece managed by FAI: Villa Necchi Campiglio in Milan.

Ero un ragazzino quando Renzo Zorzi,  allora responsabile dell’immagine, del design e delle attività culturali di Olivetti, conosciuto il mio lavoro sul restauro del Museo di Castelvecchio in Verona, mi incaricava di esplorare con la macchina fotografica (a quel tempo usavo una meravigliosamente pesante e lenta Sinar 8×5) il negozio che Carlo Scarpa aveva disegnato ed inaugurato nel 1958 a Venezia in Piazza San Marco per Adriano Olivetti.

Nelle parole di Fulvio Irace: “si tratta di un’opera assolutamente atipica sia per l’attenzione ai materiali, che per la qualità dello spazio e per la maniera in cui questo spazio viene “teatralizzato”. Si tratta di un negozio di pochi metri quadri,  che viene magistralmente organizzato, con il piano terra e il soppalco, in una maniera che si può definire in senso positivo “teatrale”, nel senso che è come una messa in scena di un lungo racconto spaziale, dove addirittura viene introdotto il tema dell’acqua – che è uno dei temi classici di Scarpa – attraverso la forma della fontana e della vasca su cui viene poi appoggiata la scultura di Viani”.

Questo gioiello è ora proprietà delle Assicurazioni Generali che dopo un accurato restauro l’hanno affidato alle cure del FAI :: Fondo Ambiente Italiano, che dal 20 aprile 2011 ne farà la sua sede veneziana.

Una trentina di mie fotografie, scattate intorno al 1984,  emerse dagli archivi di Olivetti grazie all’Architetto Paolo Navone, saranno in mostra fino all’ 8 maggio 2011 presso un altro dei capolavori gestiti dal FAI: Villa Necchi Campiglio a Milano.

Stimulus>Respond published one of my Nigerian Stories, The King of the Blinds, in it’s tenth issue, called Legend. the story was published alongside a short text by Anna Felicia Nardandrea who sees in the Nigerian Blind King a reflection of Oedipus myth. Stimulus>Respond is an elegant and intelligent electronic quarterly magazine published in London that deals with fashion, art, literature, architecture, music and cultural news. This story of success started in 2008 by a group of young talents aged between 21 and 24: Jack Boulton (editor in chief), Rose Cooper-Thorne (architecture editor), Hannah Yelin (music editor), Christopher Thomas (art editor), Christos Kyriakides (fashion editor), Phil Sawdon and Marsha Meskimmon (literature editors). Africa: See you, See me!

gets to italy and starts its tour from Firenze, at fsmgallery - Fondazione Studio Marangoni, where it will be on air from 17 febbraio to 22 marzo 2011.

Thirty-five authors from fourteen countries, selected by Awam Amkpa to show the influence of african post-colonial photography on  visual language in Africa and its diaspora representation.

The show has been produce by Africana Studies Department of New York University for the portuguese foundation Africa.cont and has been opened for the first time in Lisbon at Museu da Cidade on 2010.10.01.

Da diverso tempo affianco al lavoro commerciale una intensa attività di ricerca personale e di promozione sociale. Di questo altro mio mondo fa parte il lavoro che presento qui ora.

Ho realizzato queste nove immagini con un gruppo di otto detenuti della Maison Centrale di Arles, in Provenza; incaricato dalla società Préface Léo Lagrange, responsabile della formazione dei detenuti, per cinque giorni ho tenuto all’interno di questo carcere di massima sicurezza un laboratorio di ”introduzione alla fotografia di ritratto”,  parte del più ampio corso ”operateur de traitement de l’image numerique”.
.
Ai detenuti ho proposto di raccontare al mondo di fuori la loro percezione della prigionia, inventando metafore visive delle quali l’attore principale fosse il corpo, nella dimensione carceraria l’unica proprietà certa.

Dopo una lunga e impegnativa discussione, servita anche a vincere alcune diffidenze, abbiamo realizzato nove immagini alle quali abbiamo in seguito aggiunto dei  titoli scritti a mano (con il corpo).

Tutto il processo si è svolto alternando informazioni tecnico/operative a discussioni sulle intenzioni e sui risultati. Per l’impossibilità di stampare a colori abbiamo intitolato la serie ”Une vie en noir et blanc”, titolo che ha poi fornito ai detenuti lo spunto per  un testo esplicativo.

Il lavoro, senza dubbio pioneristico per il contesto, è stato fortemente apprezzato da tutte le sfere coinvolte: dai detenuti innanzitutto, poi dal Direttore dello stabilimento Sig. Jean Philippe Mayol, dalla direzione dell’amministrazione penitenziaria e da Jean De Laforge, responsabile di Leo Lagrance. Lo psicologo del penitenziario Charles Balhouanes, l’assistente psichiatrico Laurent Segui e il responsabile della formazione del personale carcerario, Thierry Chauvin, hanno inoltre utilizzato le fotografie per una delicata e diversa azione di prevenzione del suicidio.

Ora sono ad Arles per un secondo laboratorio, questa volta si tratta di ‘’introduzione alla fotografia di oggetti”; riprenderemo oggetti presi dal quotidiano degli stagisti  per farne una serie intitolata ‘’Portraits d’objets detenus’’.

Ma di questo dirò al mio rientro.

For some time now alongside my professional work I have also been carrying out quite a lot of research work, both social and artistic in nature. The work I am presenting here, now, is a part of this other world of mine.

These new images were created with inmates from the Maison Centrale of Arles in Provence; and were commissioned by the Préface Léo Lagrange Group, who organized the training for prison inmates that I did for five days in this maximum security prison. It consisted of a workshop “An Introduction to Portrait Photography”, which is one part of  a longer course called  “expert in treatment of digital images”.

I made a proposal to the prisoners, and this was to tell their “stories” of prison to the outside world, inventing visual metaphors where the body played the main role; the body, the only property that is definitely their own. After a long, challenging discussion, which helped some people to overcome their distrust, almost aversion to the project, we created new images and added new titles to them too, by hand (with the body).

The whole process consisted alternatively of tecnical/practical information followed by discussion on intentions and their results. Since it was impossible for us to print in colour we called the series “Une vie en noir et blanc” (A life in black and white). The title, in fact, then spurred  the prisoners on to develop an explanatory text as well.

This work, which, in this context, was a completely new venture, was, in fact, very successful at all levels of the prison world that were involved in it: above all for the prisoners, and also for the Head of the Establishment  Mr.  Jean Philippe Mayol, the board of security administration and Mr. Jean De Laforge, from Preface Léo Lagrange Group. The prison psychologist Charles Balhouanes, the assistant psychiatrist Laurent Segui and the head of the prison staff’s training Mr.Thierry Chauvin also used the photographs as the starting point of a sensitive suicide prevention action that they carried out.

I am leaving now to do a second workshop, this one is an “Introduction to the photography of objects”; where we will photograph objects from everyday life in prison to create a sweries entitles “Portraits d’objets detenus” (Portraits of imprisoned objects)

But I’ll tell you more about this on my return.
